Oranges

Fresh oranges from California, Florida and Arizona are available throughout the year. Here are some of the varieties available from Dearborn Farms.

Navel Oranges

Generally available from November through May, with peak supplies in January, February and March. Navel oranges are generally considered the finest eating orange in the world. They are well known for being easy to peel and segment. They are generally large to extra large, round to oval and have a deep orange color. They have been cultivated to produce seedless fruit, though an occasional seed may appear. Easily identified by the navel or button formation opposite the stem end.

Valencia Oranges

Available from February through October, with peak supplies in May, June and July (hence the name "summer oranges"). Valencias are extremely sweet and flavorful. Thin skin makes them difficult to peel, so they are generally cut into "smiles" (cut fruit in half crosswise and then into three or four wedges for each half). They also are perfect for juicing. Their color is yellow to orange, sometime with a tint of green (don't worry, the inside will still be orange and juicy!). Usually seedless or with only a few seeds.

Temple Orange

An exceptionally good eating orange, Temple Oranges have a rich fragrance and flavor all their own. They may have a few seeds, but peel and section easily. They are deep orange in color with a pebbly peel.

Red Navel Orange

Very sweet and easy to peel, this red-orange flesh variety is good to eat and good for you with more dietary fiber than a serving of raisins.

Ambersweet Orange

Easy to peel and section, this variety tastes like a mild tangerine. An excellent source of Vitamin C and Fiber.

Hamlin Orange

One of the best juice oranges available.

Pineapple Orange

Has some seeds, but is acclaimed for its juicy sweetness.

Tangerines

The first cousins of oranges, tangerines tend to be smaller in size and have a looser peel. There are three different types of tangerines: tangerines, mandarins and tangelos. Some common varieties include:

Fairchild Tangerines

Available mid-October through December. Bright orange inside and out, they have complex, sweet flavor and peel and section easily.

Dancy Tangerine

Also available just before Christmas. Exceptionally easy to peel with a rich sweet flavor and spicy aroma.

Orlando Tangelos

Available November through January. A tangerine-grapefruit hybrid which peels easily and is very juicy. Medium to large in size.

Minneola Tangelos

Sometimes called a "Honeybell" Tangelo. Another tangerine-grapefruit hybrid, they are medium to very large with a deep orange to red-orange color.

Honey Mandarins

Available mid-January through April, these small to medium size hybrids are aromatic and richly flavored with many seeds.

Grapefruits

Fresh grapefruit are available year 'round. Along with white to yellow flesh varieties, are several popular pink and red varieties.

White Seedless Grapefruit

White to amber colored flesh with few (if any) seeds. Excellent flavor with plenty of juice. High in dietary fiber, making it a valuable part of any weight watcher's diet.

Ruby Red Grapefruit

Smooth yellow peel with areas of pink to red blush. Segments have pink to reddish tinge. Intense, sweet flavor; few seeds.

Flame grapefruit

Flavorful, sweet and juicy, with red, seedless flesh. Very high in fiber.
